Herbal Steam Magic

We almost didn’t go to the sauna last night. It’s a longer than usual drive for nightly adventure on this little island. I’m glad we pushed ourselves to get there. It was an unforgettable night.

My dear friend Jess and I arrived early and had a few sweats in the sauna to loosen up. The sauna is actually a herbal steam dome but we just call it “the sauna”, though it’s so much more than that. The place was created by a cool older hippie dude who clearly knows what it means to chill out. At the center of it all is a big bonfire surrounded by mats and cushions and a few low tables because there is incredible food to be eaten. We had an epic feast last night, including mushroom crepes, baked potatoes with more mushrooms, salad and a blueberry mousse! pancake to annihilate ourselves finally.

The music at the sauna is always conducive to deep chilling. Jess brought her glow poi with her and was weaving her magic into the tapestry of the night’s unfolding. I lay back looking up at the moon and stars most of the night but gave the poi a whirl when two sexy men with guitars began swooning us with their own magic.

For me there is no more ideal way to spend an evening than this. Beautiful souls gathered around a fire, becoming softer in and out of the steam room, spontaneous heart singing, guitars, harmonica, dancing, sipping hibiscus tea, connecting deeply, rolling on the floor freely, celebrating the mystery of existence!

I definitely don’t regret letting go of alcohol partying ;)

I feel unbelievably relaxed and uplifted this morning and just did a little research into the medicinal side of herbal steam. The beauty of a night like last night is that the enjoyment is also incredibly therapeutic. Bonus!

The herbal steam is a traditional Thai healing therapy still popular in many places in Thailand. It is one of the more pleasant and effective ways to detox. The combination of steam and herbs helps the body to eliminate toxins through the skin and lungs.

“This is also a form of aromatherapy, but instead of just sniffing the aromatic essence released in the air through your nose, you immerse your entire body in it and breathe in hot damp vapour that carries the medicinal aromatic essences of the herbs deeply into your lungs, where they are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and circulated directly to every tissue of the body, delivering their therapeutic powers to each and every cell. At the same time the hot steam opens the pores and allows the herbal vapours to enter the skin to draw toxins out with the sweat. Thai herbal steam simultaneously cleanses the body from the inside and the outside, providing a doubly detoxifying effect, as well as a very relaxing and soothing experience”

-Daniel Reid, from his amazing book The Tao of Detox

  • Removes Toxins

  • Improves Skin Conditions such as Acne, Eczema & Psoriasis
  • Relieves Muscle tension and stiff joints

  • Improves blood circulation & reduces cellulite

There you have it. That’s why I always feel so awesome after a steam. My skin feels silky and smooth, my lungs feel more open and clear and there’s just a nice sense of everything flowing beautifully within me.

So obviously I highly recommend finding a herbal steam room near you and if there isn’t one you should probably move or make one yourself! I’m sure all the world’s problems could be solved if everyone just chilled at a magical herbal steam room from time to time.
